May 29, 2003 - ASTM International announces that a 2003 Award of Merit and the accompanying title of Fellow, the highest society recognition for individual contributions to standards activities, has been bestowed upon Daniel J. Chwirut, formerly of the Food & Drug Administration and currently Vice President of Engineering for CardioMed Device Consultants in Gambrills, MD. Chwirut received this honor for his outstanding leadership and participation in fostering the development and promulgation of standards for surgical implants in ASTM Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices. Through his work, voluntary standards, rather than federal regulation, have been emphasized, and these voluntary standards have been widely circulated throughout the industry. Chwirut lives in Rockville, MD, and has been a member of ASTM International member since 1971, focusing for the last 20 years on F04 activities. At a time when U. S. regulatory agencies came to understand the value of strong consensus standards in helping them meet congressional mandates, he was one of the pioneering FDA staff that joined committee F04 and began actively participating in standards development and writing. He has held several offices at the committee and subcommittee level throughout his tenure and has become well known for his willingness to take responsibility for the many tasks that are required for the proper functioning of a committee. In 1990 he received the F04 Scientific American Award. In 1998, he was honored with the F04 Leroy Wyman Award, and in 2002 he received the F04 Award of Merit. He also served on ASTM’s Committee on Technical Committee Operations. He is also a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and various International Standards Organization (ISO) and AAMI technical task groups A native Washingtonian, Chwirut graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park. MD, with a B.S.M.E. in mechanical engineering, and he received his M.S. in mechanics from the same institution. He began his career with the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) in 1966, where he was a research engineer. Moving to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1979 and remaining there until 2002, he joined CardioMed in 2003. His career has been primarily one of mechanical testing of materials and structures, mechanical test method development and the development of product standards. ASTM Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices is one of 130 technical standards-writing committees. Established in 1898, ASTM International is one of the largest standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems, and commercial transactions around the globe. |
