Dr. McEwan works with CardioMed Device Consultants as an affiliate consultant on drug-related issues associated with drug-eluting intravascular stents. She is a well-recognized consultant in the area of cardiovascular medicine and combination products. Dr. McEwan received her doctoral degree from the University of Glascow in molecular pathology in 1995 following an undergraduate degree from Edinburgh University in biochemistry and physiology in 1991. Her doctoral work elucidated important mechanisms of cardiovascular cell growth and proliferation in response to hypertension. Between 1996 and 2001, she held postdoctoral research positions at Edinburgh University (Molecular Medicine Center, Department of Pharmacology), and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School (Cardiovascular Genetics), and from 2001-2004 she conducted industry research at the Washington Hospital Center, Georgetown University and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Her postdoctoral work (1) investigated the cellular expression of endothelin and endothelin receptor mRNA as a cardiovascular hormone in heart failure, (2) identified novel transcription factors that determine differential renin gene expression, and (3) investigated pharmacological expression of the angiotensin II receptors in atherosclerosis. As a senior manager of research and development, she moved forward the understanding of photodynamic therapy, a combination therapy for the treatment of atherosclerotic and vulnerable plaques. Her cardiovascular industry work has focused on research and development of pharmaceutical, biologic, gene therapy and medical device products for cardiovascular indications, such as coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure, involving the completion of investigational new drug (IND) applications and supporting preclinical studies for the initiation of pre-market clinical trials. |
